Work

Apples and Accolades

Today is Gardner-Webb’s Annual “Apples and Accolades” for faculty and staff. This is a faculty and staff recognition program and a picnic. Every year we all gather together while members of GWU’s workforce receive awards for how long they’ve been here and how wonderful they are. After that, we eat FOOD hehe. I always love the cookies and fruit. Last year they served barbecue but we’ll have to wait and see about today. I love anything that gets me out of work for 2 hours and has food. Two more years til I can get my “5 year award”. Let’s hope not 😉

Lunch with the Girls

Today Cary, Maxine, and I ventured to Gastonia to the new Olive Garden for lunch as a sort of “farewell lunch” for Maxine. She isn’t leaving til some time in June but it’s the last chance we have while we have student workers to work the shop. It was so nice and now I only have about 2.5 hours left of the day. It’s so nice not to have to be stuck at work all the time. I wish I could just do my work and then leave when it’s done everyday and still get paid the same. Wouldn’t that be nice. My meal was actually pretty cheap for the all you can eat soup, salad, and breadsticks. Very good!

Prayers needed

I wanted to ask that those of you that pray, please pray for me. I’m still awaiting some news about something. Hopefully I will find out by weeks end. It means a pretty big life change for me and Justin. I know this makes it sound super big but don’t worry it’s nothing bad. I just can’t say just yet. I’m just struggling through the wait trying to figure out what decision to make. Thank you so much for your support. And no…I’m not pregnant LOL

Time…

Why is it that while I’m in the bookstore time either goes really fast and it’s crazy busy or it’s slower than dialup? I’m one of those people that has to be busy when at work.  Otherwise I just sit there, bored.  I’ve been trying to think of things to do now that rush is over and I’m already caught up on returns until I can begin them again at the end of February.  All my calls have been returned (I hate the phone).  I guess I’ll just have to wait for the next task.  Anybody else in the same boat?

Big Boys and Girls

I’ve decided that it’s about time that our faculty here at GWU grows up. My job, as you all know, is to order the books for each semester. I usually send out plenty of reminder emails before the deadlines to the faculty to turn in their book orders. I even call some. Well I’m tired of it! They are adults and in most cases much older than me. Surely 5 reminder emails is plenty. Against the advice from other workers here I have decided that I’m done reminding. They know when the due date WAS (October 10th) and have chosen to ignore it. So, come the first day of class they will figure out that they have not turned their orders in. Normally I give many chances but lately I’ve just been getting chewed out from professors for my reminders saying that it’s “a bit much” so I’ll take that advice.

Have a grand day 🙂

Long Lunch

Today Maxine, Cary, Steven, and I went to Mi Pueblitos for lunch. Afterwards we dropped Steven off back at GWU and then ventured over to the Coffee Shop for a Frozen drink. Mmmmm! Then we stopped by the “Talk of the Town” Salon and got pricing info for Cary. All in all it took about 2 hours. I love going to lunch with the girls. It’s been a dull time here at the store and time goes by slowly so killing a few hours with friends has been great! Now, if only it was 430 🙁 it’s only 2:30. Two more hours!

Well have a great day all!

GWU aids Hurricane Victims with Education

“BOILING SPRINGS, NC – Gardner-Webb University, a master’s comprehensive
university located in Western North Carolina, will waive tuition for
college
students displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The waiving of tuition is
contingent
upon the student satisfying his/her financial
obligation to his/her home institution.

“Desiring to see no displaced college student loose a semester of study
and to see the continued financial stability of sister institutions,
the
administration, faculty, and staff of the university will do all
that it can to make the transition to Gardner-Webb and North Carolina
as
smooth as possible,” noted Dr. Jack Buchanan, vice president of
Enrollment
Management at Gardner-Webb.

Limited housing on campus is available; otherwise, Residence Life will
assist in securing local housing. “To reach out to these victims is the
right thing to do,” added Buchanan, “and it exemplifies the
Gardner-Webb
motto – ‘For God and Humanity.’ When we see the devastation and need,
we offer our prayers of support but we are also
driven to supply physical assistance as well. Providing these students
educational assistance is one thing that Gardner-Webb feels compelled
to
do.”

–I must say that this is very unexpected but cool. I hope we can help some people out!

Customer Service

Sometimes I hate being in the customer service line of work. People can be so rude and I just want to make it known that I’m not impressed with their behavior. Earlier I answered the main line “Campus Shop can I help you?” and, as it typically goes a man asked, “Is this the Bookstore?”. I could tell already he was not a nice individual by the tone in his voice. After answering him that he was calling the correct place he said he needed prices for textbooks. I told him what we tell everyone (due to so many calls and not enough staff) to go on our website and he could find all that information there. He proceeded, “I’m calling you!” and I explained that this is what we were instructed to do and then he said (in a snotted voice) “Well…I don’t have a computer”. Knowing that he was just telling me this to get me to tell him over the phone I told him it might be a few minutes but I might be able to look it up for him. I asked him how many books he needed to know about and he snapped at me that it was a certain course #. I said, “This is for a Summer class right?” and he said “No, Fall” and I said that I could not help him because that information would not be available until July 25th (which is the truth). He was still snotty and said tell me the names of the books and I said I didn’t have that info yet (which is true) and he said, “Well then give me the prices” and I couldn’t do that either considering I do not know what the books are and we haven’t ordered yet. I just kept repeating myself that the information and books should be available on the 25th. Finally he got mad and said he would be calling back on the 25th and I said “Great”.

So tell me, why do I have to put up with that? Why are people taught that it is acceptable to treat others that way? I can understand if there is an ongoing issue that you have to be snotty to get someone to listen but for this…no way.
